YARRAVILLE EXPANSION
We’re Australia’s leading supplier of sustainable cement
Our recycled cement products reduce the CO² emissions in concrete by 90% – saving 90 tonnes of CO² every hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We’ve helped build the West Gate Tunnel Project, the Metro Tunnel, the Bolte Bridge, the new Footscray Hospital and much more. As Melbourne grows, so too does demand for our sustainable cement. That’s why we’re proposing to expand and upgrade our facility in Yarraville’s industrial precinct.
We’ll keep trucks off local roads
Steel Cement will pay 100% of our customers’ West Gate Tunnel tolls to keep trucks off local roads.
Combined with truck bans, curfews and new enforcement cameras, there’s only one way customers will be able to get to our site – via the tunnel and approved on and off ramps. It’s a $1 million a year commitment to keeping trucks off local roads in the inner west.
We’re growing
We’re growing to meet booming demand for our sustainable cement products.
We’re proposing to build a new mill, processing and distribution facilities, as well as more storage. Because our raw materials arrive via sea, our berth-side facility reduces the need for trucks to carry imported materials to off-site plants. The EPA has assessed our proposal and environmental reports and has issued a development licence, and we’re seeking a planning permit from Maribyrnong City Council.
Direct access to the port reduces truck traffic
Our site has direct access to the Port of Melbourne. This means only our finished products need to be transported offsite, saving 1,500 truck movements per ship.
Managing Impact
Trucks and traffic
Our customer fleet averages about 5 years of age, meaning they’re up to date with the latest emissions standards. Only closed tanker trucks transport our products from the mill, meaning no dust/air pollution. And we’ll pay our customers’ West Gate Tunnel tolls to keep trucks from our site off local roads.
Crystalline Silica
Our process contains less than 0.1% crystalline silica. The safety of our staff, customers and community is vital, so we conduct real-time monitoring. We’ve proven that exposure levels are less than detectable levels meaning there is no risk to the community posed by crystalline silica.
Odour, noise and dust
There is no open-air dumping in our operations, our process is odourless, and all emissions are treated by state-of-the-art dust collection facilities which are regularly monitored and always below EPA requirements.
Noise emissions will remain below existing background noise.
Approvals and permits
The EPA has issued a development license for our expansion. The Victorian Government has also issued a planning permit for part of our site that is within the Port Zone. Maribyrnong City Council will consider our application for a planning permit in the coming months.
